In order to cope with gender dysphoria and sensory sensitivities, Cussen's period had been suppressed through hormonal birth control and an eating disorder for more than a decade. Period Pieces is a collection of 12 poems, written typically on the first day of menstruating, documenting experiences adjusting to having a period again. Each poem can be seen as a standalone journal entry or a piece of a longer, evolving narrative over a year.

With heavy vulnerability and light humour, Period Pieces is a breakup letter to the taboo, a reminder that we still have a long way to go, and an invitation to connect through our shared experiences.

  • Waterless printing on uncoated recycled paper.

Em Cussen is a radically tender, wholehearted writer exploring their interconnected experiences of neurodivergence, sensuality, and intimacy. Em is an advocate for the Oxford comma, audibly says hello to the moon, and believes silly socks are superior. Queer, genderfluid, and autistic – Em is a super feeler, wish chip seeker, and recovering people pleaser.
